Salt Brick Wall Labor Cost: Hire a Pro or Install It Yourself?

By Natural Salt Co.

Labor for a salt brick wall is a separate cost from the bricks. As a planning example, a hired installer might add roughly $10 to $20 per sq ft on top of materials, or a job minimum for small panels, while installing it yourself saves that labor but adds tool, time and risk costs. In Natural Salt Co. bricks and adhesive, a 6 x 8 ft wall comes to approx. $1,478 to $1,532 before labor. This guide shows the math so you can compare both routes for your wall.

What you pay for either way: the materials

The bricks and adhesive cost the same whether you hire help or not. These figures are Natural Salt Co. store data from the live salt bricks for walls collection and the pink salt adhesive collection.

  • Brick size: 8 x 4 x 2 in, about 5.5 lb each (product page).
  • Coverage: the 70-pack page lists about 15.56 sq ft, which works out to 4.5 bricks per sq ft laid flat.
  • Weight on the wall: 4.5 x 5.5 lb = about 24.75 lb of salt per sq ft before adhesive.
  • Adhesive: the 3-tube pack page says it bonds up to 120 bricks, about 40 per tube. We plan at 30 to 40 bricks per tube to leave room for waste.

Among the loose packs, the 70-pack has the lowest listed price per brick. The 100-pack costs a little more per brick than the 70-pack and the 50-pack, so a bigger pack is not automatically the better buy. The store also sells sauna brick kits that include adhesive tubes (for example, 200 bricks with 6 tubes at approx. $1,240), and for some wall sizes a kit plus a smaller pack comes out lower than loose packs.

How these mixes add up:

  • 4 x 6 ft: a 70-pack plus a 50-pack (120 bricks, approx. $674) and one 3-tube pack (approx. $80), or two 2-tube packs (approx. $108) for 4 tubes.
  • 6 x 8 ft: the 200-brick sauna kit with 6 tubes (approx. $1,240), a 30-pack (approx. $185) and 8 single bricks (about $53). Add a 2-tube pack (approx. $54) if you plan on 8 tubes.
  • 8 x 10 ft: at 10 tubes, the 300-brick kit with 10 tubes (approx. $1,890), a 70-pack, a 20-pack and 6 singles. At 14 tubes, two 200-brick kits (400 bricks, 12 tubes, approx. $2,480) plus a 2-tube pack.

Hiring an installer: typical US labor estimates

Natural Salt Co. does not set installer rates, so the figures in this section are typical US estimates, not store data. They vary by location, wall condition and who you hire.

  • Published tile labor ranges: national tile installation cost guides commonly list about $5 to $15 per sq ft for standard tile labor and job minimums of roughly $300 to $500 for small single-wall jobs. One national guide lists an average of about $54 per hour for tiling help.
  • Why salt bricks may quote higher: each brick is 2 in thick and about 5.5 lb, the wall carries about 24.75 lb per sq ft, and natural salt usually needs careful layout, dry cutting and color matching. Because of that, we use an example planning rate of roughly $10 to $20 per sq ft below. Treat it as a placeholder until you get local quotes.

Labor figures are examples built from the planning rate above, not quotes. Framing or a backing panel, LED lighting, an electrician, wall repair and shipping are not included. Each depends on your space, so ask for those as separate line items.

Installing it yourself: what it really costs

A self install removes the labor line, but it is not zero cost. Plan for:

  • Tools you may not own: a saw with a diamond blade for dry cutting, a level, a caulk gun, a straightedge, gloves and eye protection. Rent or buy based on what you already have.
  • Extra bricks: first-time installers may break or miscut more pieces. The 10% allowance in the tables may not be enough for a first wall, so a few spare singles at about $6.60 each can help.
  • Time: layout, dry fitting, cutting, setting and curing take longer than they look. Plan to split the job over more than one day.
  • Heavy lifting: a 70-pack weighs about 385 lb per the product page, and an 8 x 10 ft wall puts nearly 2,000 lb of salt (80 x 24.75 lb) on the structure. Lifting help is worth planning for.

Our guide to cutting salt bricks and tiles and the list of salt wall installation mistakes cover the steps where self installs tend to go wrong.

Hire or self install? How to decide

SituationSelf install may suit you ifHiring may suit you if
Wall sizeIt is a small panel or accent areaIt is a full wall or several walls
Backing and loadThe backing is sound and already checked for the weightYou need framing, a new backing or a load check
LightingThere is no wiring, or a plug-in light stripYou want hardwired LEDs (use a licensed electrician)
ExperienceYou have tiled or laid masonry beforeThis is your first heavy wall project
SettingIt is a home roomIt is a business, where local codes and permits may apply

Some owners mix the two: they hire a pro for framing and wiring, then set the bricks themselves. Whichever route you pick, follow the adhesive maker's instructions and get a qualified professional to confirm the wall can carry the load. The salt wall planning guide walks through layout and counts.

Ways to keep the total down

  • Order your full count in one go so the bricks come from the same batch. The 70-pack page notes that all 70 bricks come from one production batch for color consistency.
  • Compare loose packs with the sauna kits for your exact count, since kits include adhesive.
  • Ask installers to quote labor separately from framing, lighting and electrical work so you can compare like for like.
  • Browse other salt wall materials if a thinner format fits your wall better.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a salt brick wall?

Materials from Natural Salt Co. run about $31 to $33 per sq ft in bricks and adhesive (prices checked October 17, 2026). Hired labor is a separate, local cost; as a planning example, roughly $10 to $20 per sq ft, so a 6 x 8 ft wall might total approx. $1,958 to $2,492. Get local quotes for your project.

Can I install a salt brick wall myself?

Yes, especially for smaller panels on a sound, load-checked backing. Plan for a diamond blade saw, spare bricks, curing time and lifting help. For framing, hardwired lighting or a load check, consider a qualified professional.

How many bricks do I need per square foot?

About 4.5 bricks per sq ft laid flat, based on the 70-pack coverage of about 15.56 sq ft. Add around 10% for cuts and breakage.

How much adhesive does a salt brick wall need?

The 3-tube pack page says it bonds up to 120 bricks, about 40 per tube. We plan at 30 to 40 bricks per tube, so a 238-brick wall needs about 6 to 8 tubes.

Is the 100-pack the lowest price per brick?

No. On October 17, 2026 the 70-pack was about $5.53 per brick and the 100-pack about $5.77, so the 70-pack was lower per brick. Prices are approximate and can change.

What is not included in a salt wall labor quote?

It depends on the installer. Framing or backing, LED lighting, electrical work, wall repair and shipping are often priced separately, so ask for each as its own line item.
