Salt Tile Wall Quantity Calculator: How Many Tiles to Order

To calculate how many salt tiles you need, multiply the wall's square footage by 4.5, subtract any openings, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage. A 4 x 6 ft wall is 24 sq ft, so it takes 108 tiles, or about 119 with the allowance. This guide gives you a simple calculator you can run with a pencil, a row-by-row check for walls that do not divide evenly, and approx. costs for five example walls using Natural Salt Co. store prices.
The Salt Tile Quantity Formula
Our Himalayan salt tiles measure 8 x 4 x 1 inches. Each tile face covers 32 sq in, and a square foot is 144 sq in, so 144 / 32 = 4.5 tiles per sq ft. The store's 100-pack page lists 22.22 sq ft of coverage per 100 tiles, which matches that number.
The calculator in four lines:
- Wall area: width (ft) x height (ft) = sq ft.
- Openings: subtract doors, windows or niches you are not tiling.
- Base count: net sq ft x 4.5 = tiles.
- Order count: base count x 1.10, rounded up to a whole tile.
The 10% allowance is a planning estimate, not a store rule. It gives you spare tiles for edge cuts, a chipped corner or a tile whose color you would rather not use. Busier layouts with many angled cuts, such as herringbone, may need more. Our guide to salt tile wall patterns covers how each layout affects cuts.

Check the Count Row by Row
The area formula works well for budgets. For walls whose sizes do not divide evenly into tile sizes, a row count can be more accurate because every cut tile still starts as a whole tile.
- Tiles per row: wall width in inches / 8, rounded up (tiles laid horizontally).
- Rows: wall height in inches / 4, rounded up.
- Row count: tiles per row x rows.
Example: a wall 7 ft 4 in wide and 5 ft 10 in tall is 88 x 70 inches.
- 88 / 8 = 11 tiles per row.
- 70 / 4 = 17.5, so 18 rows (the top row is cut in half).
- Row count: 11 x 18 = 198 tiles.
- Area method: 88 x 70 / 144 = about 42.78 sq ft x 4.5 = about 193 tiles.
The row count is 5 tiles higher because the half-height top row still uses full tiles. In this case we would plan from 198, then add 10%: 198 x 1.10 = 217.8, so order about 218 tiles. In a running bond (offset) layout, every other row starts and ends with a half tile, which adds a few more cuts; for most feature walls the 10% allowance is a reasonable cushion, but count your rows if the wall is small or narrow.
If you are not sure how to take the measurements, see how to measure a wall for a salt wall project and the salt tile size guide.
Tile Quantities for Common Wall Sizes
These counts use the area method, which matches the row method here because each width divides by 8 inches and each height by 4 inches. Weight uses the store's listed 2.9 lb per tile, which works out to about 13 lb of salt per sq ft before adhesive.
| Wall | Net sq ft | Base tiles (x 4.5) | Order with 10% | Approx. salt weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 ft | 24 | 108 | 119 | approx. 345 lb |
| 6 x 8 ft | 48 | 216 | 238 | approx. 690 lb |
| 8 x 8 ft | 64 | 288 | 317 | approx. 919 lb |
| 10 x 8 ft | 80 | 360 | 397 | approx. 1,151 lb |
| 12 x 8 ft with a 3 x 7 ft door | 96 - 21 = 75 | 337.5 | 372 | approx. 1,079 lb |
That weight sits on the wall, so it is worth having a qualified contractor confirm that the backing and framing can carry it before you order, and following the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for the surface you have.
Turn the Tile Count Into Packs
Pink salt tiles are sold as singles and in packs from 2 to 300. These are store prices checked today, with the per-tile and per-sq-ft figures recalculated by us (per sq ft = per tile x 4.5).
| Pack | Approx. price | Approx. per tile | Approx. per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single tile | approx. $6 | about $5.99 | about $27 |
| Pack of 10 | approx. $59 | about $5.88 | about $26.50 |
| Pack of 30 | approx. $175 | about $5.83 | about $26.25 |
| Pack of 50 | approx. $290 | about $5.80 | about $26.10 |
| Pack of 70 | approx. $400 | about $5.71 | about $25.70 |
| Pack of 100 | approx. $572 | about $5.72 | about $25.75 |
| Pack of 150 | approx. $810 | about $5.40 | about $24.30 |
| Pack of 200 | approx. $1,071 | about $5.35 | about $24.10 |
| Pack of 300 | approx. $1,600 | about $5.33 | about $24 |
Prices checked October 22, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
Two things the numbers show. First, the 100-pack costs slightly more per tile (about $5.72) than the 70-pack (about $5.71), so a bigger pack is not automatically lower per tile. Second, the 150, 200 and 300 packs are the lowest per tile on the list. Packs of 2, 4 and 20 are also available on the salt tile page for topping up an order.

Example Orders and Approx. Cost
For each wall we searched every pack combination at today's prices and listed the lowest-cost mix that covers the order count. The per-sq-ft figure divides the salt cost by the net wall area, so it includes the 10% allowance.
| Wall | Order count | Lowest-cost pack mix found | Approx. tile cost | Approx. per sq ft of wall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 ft | 119 | 100 + 10 + 4 + 4 + 1 | approx. $684 | about $28.50 |
| 6 x 8 ft | 238 | 200 + 30 + 4 + 4 | approx. $1,293 | about $26.90 |
| 8 x 8 ft | 317 | 300 + 10 + 4 + 2 + 1 | approx. $1,700 | about $26.60 |
| 10 x 8 ft | 397 | 200 + 200 (400 tiles) | approx. $2,142 | about $26.80 |
| 12 x 8 ft with door | 372 | 200 + 150 + 20 + 2 | approx. $2,010 | about $26.80 |
Prices checked October 22, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
For the 10 x 8 ft wall, two 200-packs give 3 extra tiles and still come out lower than an exact 397-tile mix at today's prices. The 4 x 6 ft wall costs the most per sq ft because its order comes from a 100-pack plus small packs, which are higher per tile.
How Much Adhesive to Plan For
The store's pink salt adhesive 3-tube pack lists coverage of "up to 120 salt bricks." Our tiles share the brick's 8 x 4 inch face, so as a planning estimate we use 30 to 40 tiles per tube. Your real usage depends on the bead pattern, the wall surface and the manufacturer's instructions, so check the product page before ordering.
| Wall | Order count | Tubes (estimate) | Approx. adhesive cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 ft | 119 | 3 to 4 | approx. $80 to $108 |
| 6 x 8 ft | 238 | 6 to 8 | approx. $160 to $214 |
| 8 x 8 ft | 317 | 8 to 11 | approx. $214 to $294 |
| 10 x 8 ft | 397 | 10 to 14 | approx. $268 to $374 |

Adhesive costs use the lowest mix of single tubes (approx. $30), 2-packs (approx. $54) and 3-packs (approx. $80) we found for each tube count.
What the Calculator Does Not Cover
The store data above covers tiles and adhesive. Other parts of a salt wall depend on your site and are typical US costs that vary by location and project, so price them locally:
- Labor, if you hire an installer.
- Framing, backing board or a support ledger.
- LED lighting and a licensed electrician if you plan backlit salt tiles.
- Shipping to your location.
