Salt Tile Sizes Explained: 8 x 4 x 1 Tiles, Thickness and Coverage

Natural Salt Co. salt tiles come in one standard size: 8 inches long, 4 inches high and 1 inch thick. Each tile has a 32 square inch face, so about 4.5 tiles cover one square foot. The same 8 x 4 face is used on our 2 inch thick salt bricks, so the real choice is thickness, not face size. Below are the specs, the coverage math, pack prices and how to pick between a 1 inch tile and a 2 inch brick.
Salt Tile Size at a Glance
These figures come from Natural Salt Co. product listings (store data). Where a listing gives two values, we show both.
| Spec | Salt tile | Salt brick (for comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| Face size | 8" x 4" | 8" x 4" |
| Thickness | 1" | 2" |
| Face area | 32 sq in | 32 sq in |
| Pieces per sq ft (tight joints) | 4.5 | 4.5 |
| Weight per piece | About 2.5 to 2.9 lb (listing shows both values) | See the salt brick dimensions guide |
| Material | 98%+ pure Himalayan pink salt, Khewra Mine, Pakistan | Himalayan pink salt |
Natural salt is cut from rock, so expect small variation in color and veining from tile to tile. If an exact measurement matters for your layout, check the product page or our salt tile size guide before you order.

How Many Salt Tiles Per Square Foot?
The math is simple:
- One square foot = 12" x 12" = 144 sq in
- One tile face = 8" x 4" = 32 sq in
- 144 / 32 = 4.5 tiles per square foot
That figure assumes tight joints. If you plan visible gaps between tiles, each tile covers a little more wall and you need slightly fewer. Cuts at edges, outlets and corners work the other way and add waste. As a planning range, we suggest adding about 10% extra for cuts and breakage. That is a recommendation, not a fixed rule; a wall with many cuts may need more.
Wall size to tile count
| Wall size | Area | Tiles at 4.5 per sq ft | With about 10% extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft x 2 ft | 4 sq ft | 18 | 20 |
| 3 ft x 4 ft | 12 sq ft | 54 | 60 |
| 4 ft x 6 ft | 24 sq ft | 108 | 119 |
| 5 ft x 8 ft | 40 sq ft | 180 | 198 |
Extra counts are rounded up to whole tiles.
Why Tile Thickness Matters
At 1 inch, a salt tile is half the thickness of a 2 inch brick with the same face. That one difference changes several things on a project:
- Wall load: using the listed 2.5 to 2.9 lb per tile, salt tiles add roughly 11 to 13 lb per square foot (4.5 x 2.5 = 11.25; 4.5 x 2.9 = 13.05) before adhesive. A 2 inch brick holds about twice the salt by volume, so expect a noticeably heavier wall. This is an estimate; confirm the backing with a qualified contractor.
- Depth off the wall: tiles sit about 1 inch out plus the adhesive layer. That can make trim, outlet boxes and door casings easier to work around than with 2 inch bricks.
- Light: the product listing describes the tiles as semi-translucent. In general, thinner salt lets more light pass, so a backlit tile wall can show a brighter glow at the same LED setting. Results vary with the stone and the lighting design.
- Feel: bricks give more visible depth and a heavier, masonry look. Tiles read flatter and more like a finished surface.

Salt Tile Pack Sizes and Price Per Tile
Prices below are Natural Salt Co. store prices for 8" x 4" x 1" pink tiles. Price per tile and cost per square foot are our own math (pack price / tiles, then x 4.5). Prices checked October 6, 2026.
| Pack | Price | Price per tile | Cost per sq ft | Coverage (sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 tile | $5.99 | $5.99 | $26.96 | 0.22 |
| 2 tiles | $11.89 | $5.95 | $26.75 | 0.44 |
| 4 tiles | $23.59 | $5.90 | $26.54 | 0.89 |
| 10 tiles | $58.80 | $5.88 | $26.46 | 2.22 |
| 20 tiles | $116.89 | $5.84 | $26.30 | 4.44 |
| 30 tiles | $174.99 | $5.83 | $26.25 | 6.67 |
| 50 tiles | $289.99 | $5.80 | $26.10 | 11.11 |
| 70 tiles | $399.99 | $5.71 | $25.71 | 15.56 |
| 100 tiles | $571.99 | $5.72 | $25.74 | 22.22 |
| 150 tiles | $809.99 | $5.40 | $24.30 | 33.33 |
| 200 tiles | $1,070.99 | $5.35 | $24.10 | 44.44 |
| 300 tiles | $1,599.99 | $5.33 | $24.00 | 66.67 |
| 400 tiles | $2,109.00 | $5.27 | $23.73 | 88.89 |
| 500 tiles | $2,499.99 | $5.00 | $22.50 | 111.11 |
| 1,000 tiles | $4,909.99 | $4.91 | $22.09 | 222.22 |
Two things the numbers show. First, price per tile mostly drops as packs get larger, but not every step: the 70 pack ($5.71 per tile) comes out slightly lower per tile than the 100 pack ($5.72). Second, the gap between small and mid packs is small (about 19 cents per tile from 1 to 50), while the larger drops start at 150 tiles. Each pack has its own product page in our salt tile collection.
Two worked examples
Small niche, 2 ft x 2 ft: 4 sq ft x 4.5 = 18 tiles, about 20 with extra. One pack of 20 tiles is $116.89, which is less than two packs of 10 ($117.60).
Feature wall, 4 ft x 6 ft: 24 sq ft x 4.5 = 108 tiles, about 119 with extra. One example combination is a 100 pack plus a 20 pack: 120 tiles for $688.88 ($571.99 + $116.89), or about $5.74 per tile. For comparison, a single 150 pack is $809.99 and leaves 31 spare tiles.
These totals cover tiles only. Adhesive, backing, any LED lighting, an electrician and labor are separate. Labor and lighting costs vary a lot by location and project, so get local quotes for those. For adhesive, see our pink salt adhesive page; it lists tube pack sizes, starting at $29.99 for a single tube.
Salt Tiles vs Salt Bricks: Same Face, Different Depth
Because the face is the same 8" x 4", tiles and bricks need the same count per square foot. Here is how the store prices compare per piece at the pack sizes both lines share. Prices checked October 6, 2026.
| Pack | Tile (1") per piece | Brick (2") per piece | Lower per piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $5.99 | $6.60 | Tile |
| 20 | $5.84 | $6.50 | Tile |
| 30 | $5.83 | $6.17 | Tile |
| 50 | $5.80 | $5.74 | Brick |
| 70 | $5.71 | $5.53 | Brick |
| 100 | $5.72 | $5.77 | Tile |
The per piece prices are close, and which one is lower depends on the pack. So choose on thickness, weight and look first, then compare the exact packs you need. Brick prices come from our salt brick collection, and our salt brick wall cost breakdown works through full brick budgets.
Tiles often suit lighter backings, shallow recesses and backlit features. Bricks often suit projects where you want more depth or a masonry feel, such as sauna walls. If you are still weighing materials, the Himalayan salt wall materials page groups tiles, bricks and kits in one place.
Do You Need a Different Size?
Our store lists pink salt tiles in the 8" x 4" x 1" format. Larger square formats such as 8" x 8" are sometimes discussed for salt walls, but we do not list one, so we cannot give specs or prices for it here. If your design calls for a different size or a large quantity, send the details through our contact page and we can tell you what we can supply.
Planning Checklist Before You Order
- Measure the wall in feet and multiply height by width.
- Multiply by 4.5 for tile count, then add a planning margin for cuts.
- Check that the wall and backing can carry roughly 11 to 13 lb per sq ft of salt plus adhesive; ask a contractor if unsure.
- Decide on lighting before installation, since it can be hard to add later.
- Price a few pack combinations; the largest pack is not always the lowest total for your count.
- Use the salt wall planning guide for layout steps.

Frequently asked questions
What size are Natural Salt Co. salt tiles?
Our salt tiles measure 8 inches long, 4 inches high and 1 inch thick. The face is the same 8 x 4 as our salt bricks, which are 2 inches thick.
How many salt tiles cover a square foot?
About 4.5. A square foot is 144 square inches and each tile face is 32 square inches, so 144 / 32 = 4.5 with tight joints. As a planning range, we suggest adding about 10% for cuts.
How much does one salt tile weigh?
The single tile listing shows both 2.5 lb and 2.9 lb, so plan for about 2.5 to 2.9 lb per tile. That works out to roughly 11 to 13 lb per square foot before adhesive.
Do you sell 8 x 8 salt tiles?
We do not currently list an 8 x 8 salt tile, so we cannot give specs or prices for one. If your project needs a different size, send the details through our contact page.
Is a salt tile cheaper than a salt brick?
It depends on the pack. As of October 6, 2026, tiles cost less per piece at the 1, 20, 30 and 100 packs, and bricks cost less per piece at the 50 and 70 packs. The gaps are small, so compare the exact packs you need.
Should I choose 1 inch tiles or 2 inch bricks?
Tiles are lighter and sit closer to the wall, which can suit backlit features and lighter backings. Bricks add depth and a heavier masonry look. Check your backing with a qualified contractor either way.
