How many bricks or tiles a 4x8 salt wall needs

Our pink salt bricks and tiles share the same 8 x 4 inch face, so the count is the same for both. Each face covers 32 square inches, and a square foot is 144 square inches, so about 4.5 pieces cover one square foot.

  • 8 ft wide x 4 ft tall: 96 in / 8 in = 12 pieces per row, 48 in / 4 in = 12 rows, so 144 pieces.
  • 4 ft wide x 8 ft tall: 48 in / 8 in = 6 pieces per row, 96 in / 4 in = 24 rows, so 144 pieces.
  • With a 10% allowance: 144 x 1.10 = 158.4, rounded up to 159 pieces.

The allowance is a planning recommendation, not a store requirement. A staggered (running bond) pattern needs half pieces at the row ends, so some cutting is likely. Our guide on how many salt tiles per square foot walks through the same formula for other wall sizes.

A few things the store numbers show:

  • Bigger packs do not automatically cost less per piece. The 100-pack of bricks works out to about $5.77 per brick, higher than the 70-pack at about $5.53. The 100-pack of tiles is about $5.72 per tile, slightly higher than the 70-pack at about $5.71.
  • The 150-pack is the key size for this wall. It comes to about $5.42 per brick and about $5.40 per tile, which is why it anchors both 159-piece mixes.
  • Tiles and bricks land close in price here. For 159 pieces, tiles come out about $6 lower than bricks at current prices. The bigger difference is weight and depth, covered below.

Adhesive: how many tubes and what they cost

The product page for our pink salt adhesive lists coverage of 30 to 40 salt bricks per tube. For 159 bricks that works out to about 4 to 6 tubes (159 / 40 = 4.0 and 159 / 30 = 5.3, rounded up). We use 5 tubes as a middle planning figure. The listing gives coverage in bricks, so for tiles treat the same count as a planning estimate.

6two 3-packsapprox. $160

Per tube, the 3-pack is the lowest of the listed adhesive packs at about $26.66, compared with about $27.00 in the 2-pack, about $28.10 in the 10-pack and about $27.33 in the 15-pack. Our adhesive guide for salt bricks and tiles covers application and ordering in more detail.

Weight of a 4x8 salt wall

Weight often decides between bricks and tiles. Using the per-piece weights on our product listings:

  • Bricks (about 5.5 lb each): 144 x 5.5 = about 792 lb of salt on the wall, or about 24.75 lb per sq ft. Ordering 159 bricks means about 875 lb to receive and handle.
  • Tiles (about 2.5 lb each per the listing): 144 x 2.5 = about 360 lb on the wall, or about 11.25 lb per sq ft. Ordering 159 tiles means about 398 lb.

These figures exclude adhesive and backing. A wall carrying several hundred pounds should be checked by a qualified contractor or engineer before you install. See how to calculate salt brick wall weight for the full method.

Costs to price locally

Natural Salt Co. sells the salt, adhesive and kits. The items below depend on your building, location and installer, so we do not quote figures for them. Get local quotes for each:

  • Framing or backing: a stud wall, plywood or cement backer board able to carry the load. A contractor can confirm what your wall needs.
  • Base support: a ledge or footing under the bottom row, often recommended for heavy salt walls.
  • LED lighting: strips or panels behind the salt for a backlit look, plus a driver and dimmer if you want one.
  • Electrical work: a licensed electrician for new outlets, switches or hardwired lighting, following local code.
  • Installation labor: if you hire an installer rather than installing the wall yourself.
  • Shipping or freight: 159 bricks weigh about 875 lb, so check delivery terms on the product page or ask us for a quote.

Our salt wall planning guide covers backing, lighting and layout steps. For a wider view of brick wall budgets at other sizes, see how much a Himalayan salt brick wall costs.

Bricks or tiles for a 4x8 wall?

  • Pick tiles if wall load is a concern. At about 11.25 lb per sq ft, tiles put less than half the weight of bricks on the wall at a similar salt cost.
  • Pick bricks if you want more depth and a heavier, solid look, and your structure is confirmed to carry about 24.75 lb per sq ft before adhesive.
  • For backlit walls, thinner tiles may let more light through, though results vary with the salt and the lighting setup.
