Salt Brick Wall Weight: How to Calculate Installed Load

A salt brick wall weighs about 24.75 lb per square foot of salt, before adhesive. Natural Salt Co. lists each 8 x 4 x 2 in pink salt brick at 5.5 lb, and about 4.5 bricks cover one square foot, so 5.5 x 4.5 = 24.75 lb. Multiply that figure by your wall area to get the salt load, then have a contractor or structural engineer confirm that the backing, framing and floor can carry it.
Key points
- Salt brick weight: 5.5 lb per brick, as listed on the Natural Salt Co. 50-pack page.
- Coverage: an 8 x 4 in face is 32 sq in, and 144 / 32 = 4.5 bricks per square foot.
- Salt load: 4.5 x 5.5 = 24.75 lb per square foot, before adhesive.
- A 5 ft x 8 ft wall (40 sq ft) holds about 990 lb of salt.
- The 50-pack is listed at 275 lb and covers about 11.11 sq ft.
How to calculate salt brick wall weight
The math has three steps, and each one uses a number you can check on the product page.
- Find the wall area. Multiply width by height in feet. A 4 ft x 8 ft wall is 32 sq ft.
- Find the brick count. Multiply the area by 4.5. A 32 sq ft wall needs 144 bricks before any extras for cuts or breakage.
- Find the salt load. Multiply the brick count by 5.5 lb, or multiply the area by 24.75. Either way, 32 sq ft comes to 792 lb.
That result is the salt alone. Adhesive, backing board, any ledge or framing, and lighting add more. Our single adhesive tube page lists each tube at 0.86 lb and says one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks. As a rough example only, a 144 brick wall would use about 4 to 5 tubes, or roughly 3.4 to 4.3 lb of listed tube weight. We do not publish a cured adhesive weight per square foot, so ask your installer to confirm the adhesive figure for your load plan. For an irregular wall, split it into rectangles, run the math on each, and add them up.
Salt load by wall size
This table applies the 24.75 lb per sq ft figure to common accent wall sizes. Brick counts are exact coverage, rounded up to whole bricks, with no extras added.
| Wall size | Area (sq ft) | Bricks needed | Salt load (before adhesive) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft x 3 ft | 6 | 27 | 148.5 lb |
| 4 ft x 4 ft | 16 | 72 | 396 lb |
| 4 ft x 8 ft | 32 | 144 | 792 lb |
| 5 ft x 8 ft | 40 | 180 | 990 lb |
| 5 ft x 10 ft | 50 | 225 | 1,237.5 lb |
Even a small 6 sq ft section puts close to 150 lb on a wall. At 40 sq ft the salt alone is near half a ton. That is why the backing and floor deserve a professional look before you order. Our salt wall planning guide covers layout and planning steps, and the salt brick dimensions and installation guide explains brick sizes in more detail.

Pack weights and prices
Pack weight matters for delivery, storage and moving material to the room. The table below uses Natural Salt Co. store prices for pink salt bricks for walls. The 50-pack weight (275 lb) and coverage (11.11 sq ft) are listed on the product page. Other pack weights and coverage are calculated at 5.5 lb and 4.5 bricks per sq ft. Some pack sizes have their own product pages even if the collection page shows fewer packs.

Per-brick price does not fall evenly with pack size. The 20-pack costs more per brick than the 4- and 10-packs, the 100-pack costs more than the 50- and 70-packs, and the 300-pack costs a little more than the 200-pack. The 1000-pack has the lowest per-brick price at about $4.85, so it can pay to compare combinations.
Example salt cost by wall size
These are the lowest-cost pack mixes for the exact brick count, using every pack size in the table above. They cover bricks only. Adhesive, backing, framing, lighting, labor and shipping vary by location and project, so get local quotes for those. Many installers order a few extra bricks for cuts and breakage, which can change the lowest-cost mix.

Backing, floor support and code
Salt brick wall weight is structural load, not decoration you hang like a picture. We do not publish backing load ratings, and the right backing depends on your framing, wall height, floor and local code. Before you build, have a licensed contractor or structural engineer:
- Confirm the backing and its fastening can carry the full installed load.
- Check whether the wall needs a base ledge or floor bearing for the bottom course.
- Check that the floor under the wall can support the concentrated weight, which matters more on upper floors and in larger walls.
- Confirm the plan meets local building code and any permit rules.
For bonding, follow the instructions for your pink salt adhesive. The single tube page lists 0.86 lb per tube and says one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks, so a 144 brick wall would need about 4 to 5 tubes. At prices checked October 7, 2026, one tube is $29.99 and a 3-pack is $79.99. If your project is a sauna, the brick 50-pack page lists the bricks as suitable for sauna temperatures up to 200°F; your sauna builder should still confirm the structure.

Handling heavy bricks
At 5.5 lb each, a single brick is easy to carry, but packs add up fast. A 50-pack is listed at 275 lb, so plan for help or a cart when you unload, and store packs on a flat, dry, level surface close to the work area. Gloves can help with grip and protect against sharp edges. If you cut bricks, wear eye and dust protection and follow the tool maker's instructions.
How does a tile wall compare?
Salt tiles are 8 x 4 x 1 in, half the depth of a brick. The tile 50-pack is listed at 145 lb, about 2.9 lb per tile, so a tile wall carries about 4.5 x 2.9 = 13.05 lb of salt per square foot, before adhesive. Some tile descriptions list about 2.5 lb per tile, so check the product page. Either way, that is roughly half the brick figure. If your structure is limited, tiles may be worth comparing; our salt tile sizes guide covers the details. You can browse all Himalayan salt wall materials in one place.
Plan your wall with real numbers
The figure to remember is 24.75 lb of salt per square foot for Himalayan salt bricks, before adhesive. Run the math for your wall, share it with your contractor or engineer, and confirm the backing, floor and code requirements before you order. When you have your dimensions, request a project quote and we can help you work out brick counts and packs.
