Backlit Salt Tile Panels: A Buyer Guide to Tiles, Kits and Cost

A backlit salt tile panel is a section of 8 x 4 x 1 inch Himalayan salt tiles set in front of LED lighting so the salt glows. You can buy one of two ways: a complete kit from our salt wall collection that lists salt, LED lighting and adhesive together, or loose tiles plus adhesive and lighting you source yourself. At our current pink tile pack prices, the salt alone runs from approx. $22 to $27 per square foot, and tile-option kits run from approx. $26 to $45 per square foot depending on size.
What a backlit salt tile panel is
A panel is simply a defined area of salt with light behind or around it. Common setups include tiles bonded to a wall with LED strips set behind or along the edges, or tiles mounted on a backing inside a frame with lighting in a cavity behind them. Our guide to planning a backlit salt wall walks through lighting methods, wiring and backing step by step. This article focuses on what to buy and what it costs.

Why tiles are a common choice for backlit panels
Our tiles are 1 inch thick, half the depth of our 2 inch salt bricks, with the same 8 x 4 inch face. In general, thinner salt lets more light pass through, so tiles tend to suit panels where the glow is the main feature. Tiles also weigh less: the listing gives about 2.5 lb per tile, or roughly 11 lb of salt per square foot before adhesive. For a deeper comparison, see salt tiles vs salt bricks.
Salt is a natural stone, so color, veining and translucency vary from tile to tile. Darker or more heavily veined pieces may glow less than lighter ones. If an even glow matters, plan to lay out the tiles dry and arrange them before bonding.
Pink or white tiles for a backlit panel
Pink tiles give a warm amber glow. White tiles read cooler and may show LED color more clearly, but they cost more per tile at every pack size we compared (for example, approx. $5.72 per pink tile vs approx. $6.50 per white tile in a 100-pack). Our pink vs white comparison covers both finishes in detail.
Store data: pink salt tile prices per tile and per sq ft
These figures come from Natural Salt Co. product listings. Each tile covers 32 square inches, so 144 divided by 32 gives 4.5 tiles per square foot. Approx. cost per sq ft = price per tile x 4.5.
| Pink tile pack | Approx. price | Approx. price per tile | Approx. per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single tile | $6 | $5.99 | $27 |
| Pack of 10 | $59 | $5.88 | $26 |
| Pack of 20 | $117 | $5.84 | $26 |
| Pack of 50 | $290 | $5.80 | $26 |
| Pack of 70 | $400 | $5.71 | $26 |
| Pack of 100 | $572 | $5.72 | $26 |
| Pack of 200 | $1,071 | $5.35 | $24 |
| Pack of 500 | $2,500 | $5.00 | $23 |
| Pack of 1000 | $4,910 | $4.91 | $22 |
Prices checked October 7, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
Note that the 100-pack costs slightly more per tile than the 70-pack (about $5.72 vs about $5.71), so a bigger pack is not automatically lower per tile below the 150-pack level. Browse every size in the salt tile collection.
Cost by panel size: loose tiles vs tile-option kits
For loose tiles, we added a 10% allowance for cuts and color matching, rounded up, then found the lowest-cost mix of our pink tile packs for that count. Kit prices are the 8 x 4 x 1 inch tile option of each size in our salt wall kits, which the listings describe as including LED lights and adhesive.
| Panel size | Tiles with 10% allowance | Lowest-cost pack mix | Approx. cost, loose tiles | Approx. kit price (tile option) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 ft (4 sq ft) | 20 | 1 x 20-pack | $117 | $180 |
| 3 x 3 ft (9 sq ft) | 45 | 2 x 20-pack, 1 x 4-pack, 1 single | $263 | $300 |
| 4 x 4 ft (16 sq ft) | 80 | 1 x 70-pack, 1 x 10-pack | $459 | $480 |
| 4 x 6 ft (24 sq ft) | 119 | 1 x 100-pack, 1 x 10-pack, 2 x 4-pack, 1 single | $684 | $630 |
| 5 x 8 ft (40 sq ft) | 199 (buy 200) | 1 x 200-pack | $1,071 | $1,130 |
| 8 x 10 ft (80 sq ft) | 397 (buy 400) | 1 x 400-pack | $2,109 | No kit at this size |

The loose tile column covers the salt alone. The kit column includes the LED lighting and adhesive that the listings describe. Kit listings give coverage by square feet; check each product page for the exact piece count, whether it includes spare pieces, and the light color of the Yellow and White options before you compare line by line.
What the numbers show: for the 2 x 2, 3 x 3, 4 x 4 and 5 x 8 ft sizes, loose tiles cost less than the kit before you add adhesive and lighting. At 4 x 6 ft, the tile-option kit (approx. $630) costs less than the approx. $684 for 119 loose tiles. Kit prices per sq ft range from approx. $45 for the 2 x 2 ft size to approx. $26 for the 4 x 6 ft size.

Adhesive for a tile panel
Our clear pink salt adhesive is described as curing transparent so it does not block backlight through salt walls. The listing says one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks; it gives no separate tile figure, so treat that as a planning range for tiles and confirm with us for large orders. As an example, 80 tiles for a 4 x 4 ft panel works out to 2 to 3 tubes on that range.
| Adhesive pack | Approx. price | Approx. price per tube |
|---|---|---|
| Single tube | $30 | $29.99 |
| Pack of 2 | $54 | $27.00 |
| Pack of 3 | $80 | $26.66 |
| Pack of 10 | $281 | $28.10 |
| Pack of 15 | $410 | $27.33 |
Prices checked October 7, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
The 3-pack is lower per tube than the 10-pack and 15-pack at current prices, so compare per-tube cost before choosing a larger adhesive pack.
Costs to price locally (typical US estimates)
We do not set these costs, and they vary by location and project, so get local quotes:
- LED lighting if you buy loose tiles: strip type, color temperature, dimmer and power supply.
- Electrician for any hardwired supply, new outlet or switch. Follow local electrical code and use a licensed electrician where required.
- Backing and framing such as a backing board, frame or standoff for a lit cavity.
- Labor if you hire an installer, and shipping, which depends on weight and destination.
Buyer checklist before you order
- Measure the panel area and confirm the backing surface. Follow the adhesive and lighting manufacturer instructions for suitable surfaces.
- Check the load: at about 11 lb of salt per sq ft, a 4 x 6 ft panel carries roughly 270 lb of salt before adhesive. Ask a qualified contractor whether your wall or frame suits that weight.
- Decide on a kit or loose tiles, and if loose, choose LEDs and a power plan before you buy salt.
- Choose pink or white, and order the 10% allowance for cuts and color matching.
- Use our salt tile size guide and salt wall planning guide to confirm counts.

Frequently asked questions
What is a backlit salt tile panel?
It is a section of Himalayan salt tiles with LED lighting behind or around it so the salt glows. It can be tiles bonded to a wall with LED strips, or tiles on a backing inside a frame with lights in a cavity behind them.
Are salt tiles or salt bricks better for backlighting?
Our tiles are 1 inch thick and our bricks are 2 inches, with the same 8 x 4 inch face. In general, thinner salt lets more light through, so tiles tend to suit panels where the glow is the main feature. Bricks suit projects where depth and a heavier look matter more.
How much does a backlit salt tile panel cost?
At prices checked October 7, 2026, pink tiles alone run approx. $22 to $27 per sq ft depending on pack size. Tile-option kits that list LED lights and adhesive run from approx. $180 for 2 x 2 ft to approx. $1,470 for 5 x 10 ft. Prices are approximate and can change.
How many tiles do I need for a 4 x 4 ft panel?
A 4 x 4 ft panel is 16 sq ft. At 4.5 tiles per sq ft that is 72 tiles, or 80 with a 10% allowance. The lowest-cost pink pack mix for 80 tiles is a 70-pack plus a 10-pack, approx. $459 at current prices.
Does the adhesive block the light?
Our pink salt adhesive is described on its listing as clear when cured and made not to block backlight through salt walls. Follow the product instructions for application and cure.
Do I need an electrician for a backlit panel?
It depends on the lighting. Plug-in LED setups may not need one, but hardwired supplies, new outlets or switches usually call for a licensed electrician under local code. Check with a qualified professional for your project.
