Salt Tiles vs Salt Bricks: Which Should You Use?

By Natural Salt Co.
A pink Himalayan salt brick (8 x 4 x 2 in) beside a pink salt tile (8 x 4 x 1 in) on a light stone surface

Salt tiles vs salt bricks comes down to thickness. Both share the same 8 x 4 inch face and cover about 4.5 pieces per square foot, but a tile is 1 inch thick and a brick is 2 inches. That one difference changes the weight on your wall (about 13 lb per square foot for tiles vs about 24.75 lb for bricks, before adhesive), how light passes through, and how much depth the wall shows. On price, the two overlap more than most people expect: at Natural Salt Co., pink tiles run $22.09 to $26.96 per square foot and pink salt bricks run $21.82 to $29.70, depending on pack size (prices checked October 7, 2026).

Quick answer: salt bricks vs salt tiles

  • Tiles (8 x 4 x 1 in): about 2.9 lb each, about 13 lb per square foot of wall. A good fit for large walls, lighter backing and backlit features.
  • Bricks (8 x 4 x 2 in): 5.5 lb each, about 24.75 lb per square foot of wall. A good fit for walls where you want more depth, mass and relief.
  • Coverage: both need about 4.5 pieces per square foot (144 sq in divided by a 32 sq in face).
  • Cost: per square foot prices overlap. Tiles cost less at the 1 to 30, 100 and 150 packs, and bricks cost less at the 50, 70, 200, 300, 400 and 1000 packs, so compare the pack you would actually buy.

What is the core difference between salt tiles and salt bricks?

Depth. Both are pink Himalayan salt, which Natural Salt Co. lists as 98%+ sodium chloride from the Khewra Mine in Pakistan. Because the face size is the same, they lay out the same way and you order roughly the same count for a given wall. The tile is half the depth of the brick, so it carries about half the salt per piece. That makes it lighter and lets more light through. The brick puts more salt on the wall, which reads as depth and a heavier, more solid look.

Neither one is better in general. They are two thicknesses of the same material, and the right pick depends on your wall, your lighting plan and your budget.

How do the specs compare?

What the numbers show:

  • At single, 2, 4, 10, 20, 30, 100 and 150 piece packs, pink tiles cost less per square foot.
  • At 50, 70, 200, 300, 400 and 1000 piece packs, pink bricks cost less per square foot. The 500-pack is the same price for both.
  • Both products come in packs up to 1000 pieces. The 1000-pack is the lowest per piece for each: about $4.91 per tile and about $4.85 per brick.
  • Per-piece price does not fall evenly with pack size. For 100 bricks, a 70-pack plus a 30-pack ($572.00) is the lowest-cost mix, a little under the 100-pack ($577.00). For 100 tiles, the 100-pack ($571.99) is the lowest-cost option. Run the math for your count before you order.
  • White salt costs more than pink. A white tile 50-pack is $324.99, about $29.25 per square foot, and a white brick 50-pack is $710.00, about $63.90 per square foot.

Shipping is quoted by order and location, so it is not in these figures. Bricks put roughly twice the salt weight on the truck for the same wall area, which is worth asking about when you request a quote. For a deeper look at brick budgets, see our Himalayan salt brick wall cost guide.

When do salt tiles make more sense?

Tiles tend to fit projects where weight or light is the deciding factor:

  • Large walls. At about 13 lb per square foot, a tile wall asks a lot less of the structure than a brick wall.
  • Backlit features. A 1 inch piece lets more light through than a 2 inch piece, so a tile wall usually shows a brighter glow for the same lighting. Salt color and density vary from piece to piece, so the result differs between walls.
  • Thinner profiles. Tiles project about 1 inch less from the wall, which can matter in hallways, reception areas and tight rooms.

When do salt bricks make more sense?

Bricks tend to fit projects where depth and presence matter more than weight:

  • Accent walls with relief. The extra inch of salt gives a more three-dimensional, solid look.
  • Sauna features. Natural Salt Co. lists its pink salt bricks as suitable for sauna temperatures up to 200°F, and sells sauna packs that pair bricks with adhesive (for example, 50 bricks plus adhesive for $330).
  • Some pack sizes. If your order lands on a 50, 70, 200, 300, 400 or 1000 piece pack, bricks come in slightly under tiles per square foot.

At about 24.75 lb per square foot before adhesive, a brick wall calls for solid backing and base support. Have a qualified contractor confirm the wall can carry the load. Our salt brick dimensions and installation guide and the salt wall planning guide walk through the planning steps. You can see every size and pack in the salt brick collection.

What do tiles and bricks have in common?

More than the differences suggest. Both are the same 98%+ pure salt, both cover about 4.5 pieces per square foot, and both are installed with adhesive on solid backing. Natural Salt Co. sells pink salt adhesive for salt installs. The single tube page lists 0.86 lb per tube and says one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks. Tile coverage per tube is not listed. Because tiles share the 8 x 4 face, we use 30 to 40 pieces per tube as a planning range for tiles too, so confirm the count with us. At prices checked October 7, 2026, one tube is $29.99. Salt dissolves in water, so plan for a dry, indoor location and follow the product guidance for your install.

Some designs mix the two, for example a brick band at the base with tiles above to keep weight lower higher up the wall. If you mix, plan the backing for the heavier brick zones and treat the depth change as a deliberate design line. When cutting either product, wear eye and dust protection and follow the tool maker's instructions.

How to choose in four steps

  1. Measure the wall and multiply square feet by 4.5 to get your piece count.
  2. Multiply square feet by 13 (tiles) or 24.75 (bricks) to estimate salt weight, and have a qualified contractor confirm your wall can support it.
  3. Decide on lighting. If the wall is backlit and you want a brighter glow, tiles usually suit it better.
  4. Price the packs that match your count using the table above, then request a quote that includes shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Which is lower-cost, salt tiles or salt bricks?

It depends on pack size. At Natural Salt Co. (prices checked October 7, 2026), pink tiles run $22.09 to $26.96 per square foot and pink bricks $21.82 to $29.70. Tiles cost less per square foot at single, 2, 4, 10, 20, 30, 100 and 150 packs; bricks cost less at 50, 70, 200, 300, 400 and 1000 packs. The 500-pack is $2,499.99 for both, about $22.50 per square foot.

How much does a salt tile weigh compared with a salt brick?

A pink salt tile (8 x 4 x 1 in) is about 2.9 lb, based on the 145 lb listed for a 50-pack; some tile descriptions say about 2.5 lb, so check the product page. A pink salt brick (8 x 4 x 2 in) is listed at 5.5 lb. At 4.5 pieces per square foot, that is about 13 lb per square foot for tiles and about 24.75 lb for bricks, before adhesive.

Do tiles and bricks need the same number of pieces?

Yes. Both have an 8 x 4 inch face (32 square inches), so both need about 4.5 pieces per square foot. A 50-pack of either covers about 11.11 square feet. Add extra pieces for cuts and spares based on your layout.

Which works better for a backlit wall?

Tiles usually let more light through because they are 1 inch thick instead of 2, so a backlit tile wall tends to look brighter with the same lighting. Bricks can be backlit too and give a deeper, denser look. Salt varies from piece to piece, so results differ between walls.

Can I mix tiles and bricks in one wall?

Yes. Some designs use a brick band at the base and tiles above to keep weight lower higher up the wall. Plan the backing for the heavier brick zones, keep joints aligned, and have a qualified contractor confirm the wall can carry the load.

Do tiles and bricks use the same adhesive?

Both are installed with adhesive on solid backing, and Natural Salt Co. sells pink salt adhesive for salt installs. The single tube page lists 0.86 lb per tube and says one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks. Tile coverage is not listed; because tiles share the 8 x 4 face, we use 30 to 40 pieces per tube as a planning range, so confirm with us. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
