Rough vs Smooth Finish Salt Bricks: Look, Light, Upkeep and Cost

Rough and smooth salt bricks are the same mineral with a different face. A smooth, polished face tends to show crystal veining clearly, gives a soft sheen and is easier to dust. A rough or natural face scatters light into a more matte, textured surface with visible shadows, but it gathers more dust and can make joint lines harder to keep even. Natural Salt Co. lists its 8 x 4 x 2 in pink salt bricks with a smooth polished face, at about $5.53 to $6.60 per brick depending on pack size.

What "rough" and "smooth" mean on a salt brick
Finish describes the visible face of the brick, the side that faces the room. It does not change the salt itself, the size or the weight.
- Smooth or polished face: the face is flat and polished. Our product pages describe it as "smooth polished with natural crystalline texture," so you still see the natural mineral pattern, just on a flat surface.
- Rough or natural face: the face is left split, chiseled or uneven. Depth varies across the brick, so light and shadow change from piece to piece.
Color and veining vary with both finishes. Our pages note that tone, pattern, surface and translucency differ from brick to brick, so photos are a guide, not a promise of an exact match. For how color choice affects the look, see our guide to pink vs white salt bricks and tiles.
Rough vs smooth salt bricks compared
| Factor | Smooth (polished) face | Rough (natural) face |
|---|---|---|
| Overall look | Clean, modern, even surface | Rustic, cave-like, more texture |
| Front lighting | Soft sheen; veining reads clearly | Shadows and highlights across the face; reads more matte |
| Backlighting | Glow tends to look more even across each brick | Glow tends to look patchier because thickness varies |
| Dusting | Easier to wipe with a dry cloth | Dust can settle in crevices |
| Joint lines | Easier to keep faces flush and joints even | Uneven faces can hide small level differences, but joints look less uniform |
| Wall depth | Consistent 2 in depth on our bricks | Depth can vary from brick to brick |
| Typical fit | Living rooms, offices, retail, backlit feature walls | Rustic or cave-style rooms, accent panels where texture is the goal |
These are general design differences, not lab measurements. How a finished wall looks depends on the bricks you receive, your lighting and the installer.

Which finish fits your room?
Choose smooth if
- You plan to backlight the wall and want an even glow. Our product pages describe the bricks as semi-translucent and suited to backlighting. Our backlit salt wall lighting layout guide covers LED planning; have a licensed electrician handle the wiring.
- The space is busy or public, like a lobby, salon or shop, and the wall needs regular dusting.
- You want straight, consistent joint lines that suit a modern interior.
Consider rough if
- Texture and shadow matter more to you than an even glow.
- The wall is mostly front lit, with spotlights or wall washers that rake across the surface.
- The room has a rustic or natural stone style and the wall gets little hand contact.

Installation tips that depend on finish
- Lay out a dry run. Natural tone varies, so spread bricks out and mix them before setting. This matters most on smooth walls, where color shifts are easy to spot.
- Check the back face. Adhesive bonds to the back of the brick, not the decorative face, so finish has little effect on bonding. Follow the adhesive maker's instructions.
- Plan cuts. Cut edges on a polished wall can look different from factory edges. Place cut pieces at corners or ends. Our guide to cutting salt bricks and tiles explains the method.
- Keep it dry. Salt reacts to moisture with either finish. Dust with a dry cloth and avoid wet cleaning.
- Confirm the structure. Have a qualified contractor confirm that the wall or base can carry the load.

Frequently asked questions
What finish do Natural Salt Co. salt bricks have?
Our 8 x 4 x 2 in pink salt bricks are listed with a smooth polished face with natural crystalline texture. Tone and pattern vary from brick to brick. For a rough or rock-face finish, contact us before ordering to ask what can be supplied.
Are smooth or rough salt bricks better for a backlit wall?
Smooth bricks tend to give a more even glow because their depth is consistent. Rough faces vary in thickness, so the glow can look patchier. Have a licensed electrician handle any LED wiring.
Which salt brick finish is easier to clean?
A smooth polished face is usually easier to dust with a dry cloth. Rough faces have crevices where dust can settle. With either finish, keep salt dry and avoid wet cleaning.
Does the finish affect how the adhesive bonds?
Adhesive goes on the back of the brick, not the decorative face, so the face finish has little effect on bonding. Follow the adhesive maker's instructions. Our 3-tube adhesive pack is listed for up to 120 salt bricks.
How much do smooth salt bricks cost per square foot?
At prices checked October 21, 2026, our pink salt bricks run about $24.88 to $29.70 per sq ft in bricks alone, based on about 4.5 bricks per sq ft. The pack of 70 has the lowest approx. per brick cost, about $5.53. Prices can change; see the product page.
How many smooth salt bricks do I need for an 8 x 10 ft wall?
An 80 sq ft wall needs about 360 bricks at 4.5 per sq ft, or 396 with a 10% allowance. Five packs of 70 plus one pack of 50 gives 400 bricks for approx. $2,222, plus about $320 for four adhesive 3-packs, approx. $2,542 total before labor and shipping.
