Salt Brick Walls for Spa Relaxation Lounges: Placement, Sizing and Cost

By Natural Salt Co.
Pink Himalayan salt brick feature wall with white and peach veining behind a simple counter with two stools in a dim, calm lounge

A salt brick wall fits a spa relaxation lounge as one calm, softly lit feature wall in a dry part of the room, usually behind the main seating group. For pink Himalayan salt bricks from Natural Salt Co., a 4 x 6 ft lounge panel needs about 119 bricks with a 10% allowance and costs approx. $754 in bricks and adhesive, while a full 10 x 8 ft wall runs approx. $2,453 to $2,490. Below are placement ideas, sizing, lighting and the full cost math.

Why Salt Bricks Suit a Spa Relaxation Lounge

The relaxation lounge is where guests sit before and after treatments, so the room is usually quiet, dim and dry. That makes it a good fit for a salt brick feature wall. The bricks bring warm pink and peach tones, natural veining and a soft glow when lit from behind, without adding visual clutter.

Our Himalayan salt bricks measure 8 x 4 x 2 in and weigh about 5.5 lb each (store data). The product page lists them as 98%+ sodium chloride and semi-translucent, which is why they read well with backlighting. At 2 in thick they have more depth than 1 in tiles, which suits a lounge where the wall is the main design feature.

If you are planning several spa areas, our guide to salt wall design and layout ideas for spas covers reception and treatment rooms too.

Where to Place a Salt Brick Wall in the Lounge

Good spots

  • Behind the main seating group. Guests face the room, and the wall frames the space for anyone walking in.
  • Opposite the entry door. The wall becomes the first thing guests see when they enter the lounge.
  • A tea or refreshment counter backdrop. A panel behind a simple counter gives the lounge a clear focal point.
  • A divider between quiet zones. A partially lit panel can separate seating areas. See our notes on salt brick partition walls and columns for load and framing points.

Spots to avoid

  • Next to steam rooms, showers, pools or hot tubs. Salt dissolves in water, so steam, splashes and constant high humidity can wet the surface. Keep the wall in a dry zone and ask your installer about ventilation.
  • High-traffic corners where carts or bags rub the wall. Edges can chip if they take repeated knocks.
  • Directly above heating vents. Moving warm, moist air across the face is better kept away from the wall.

How Big Should a Lounge Salt Wall Be?

Size the wall to the seating area rather than the whole room. These are planning examples, not rules:

  • 3 x 4 ft accent panel: a small lounge corner or behind a single chair pair.
  • 4 x 6 ft panel: behind a sofa or a group of two to three loungers.
  • 6 x 8 ft wall section: a mid-size lounge where the wall is the main feature.
  • 10 x 8 ft full wall: a larger lounge or a wall guests see from the entry.

How Many Salt Bricks You Need

Natural Salt Co.'s 70-pack product page lists coverage of 15.56 sq ft for 70 bricks, which works out to about 4.5 bricks per sq ft laid flat (store data, our calculation). The steps:

  1. Multiply wall width by height to get square feet.
  2. Multiply by 4.5 to get the base brick count.
  3. Add about 10% for cuts, edges and breakage (a common planning allowance), then round up.

Example: a 4 x 6 ft panel is 24 sq ft. 24 x 4.5 = 108 bricks, plus 10% = 118.8, so plan for 119 bricks.

Weight matters too. At about 5.5 lb per brick and 4.5 bricks per sq ft, the wall carries roughly 24.75 lb of salt per sq ft before adhesive. A 4 x 6 ft panel of 108 bricks is about 594 lb. Have a qualified contractor confirm the wall and floor can carry the load. Our salt brick wall weight guide shows the full math.

At current prices the 70-pack has the lowest price per brick. The 100-pack costs a little more per brick than both the 50-pack and the 70-pack, so a bigger pack is not automatically the better value. Check the numbers for your exact count.

Spa Lounge Salt Brick Wall Cost by Size

Each example uses a 10% allowance and the lowest priced mix of loose brick packs we found at current prices. Adhesive is planned at about 40 bricks per tube, based on the 3-tube pink salt adhesive pack listing coverage of "up to 120 salt bricks." Confirm the right amount for your backing with the adhesive maker's instructions.

Brick cost alone works out to roughly $28 to $29 per sq ft for these sizes. Smaller walls cost a bit more per sq ft because small counts are harder to fill with the lower priced packs.

Kit routes for larger lounge walls

The store also sells sauna brick packs that include adhesive. For bigger walls these can come in lower than loose packs plus separate adhesive:

  • 6 x 8 ft: the 200-brick pack with 6 adhesive tubes, plus a 30-pack and 8 single bricks, comes to approx. $1,478 for 238 bricks, about $26 below the loose route.
  • 10 x 8 ft: the 300-brick pack with 10 adhesive tubes, plus a 70-pack, a 20-pack and 7 single bricks, comes to approx. $2,453 for 397 bricks, about $37 below the loose route.

For the 3 x 4 ft and 4 x 6 ft examples, the loose packs plus adhesive came out lower in our math. Prices change, so recheck both routes before you order. Browse kits and accessories in our salt wall collection.

Costs Not Included (Typical US Estimates)

The figures above cover Natural Salt Co. bricks and adhesive only. A finished spa lounge wall can also involve:

  • Backing or framing: a solid substrate or support frame rated for the load.
  • LED lighting and wiring: fixtures, drivers and dimmers, usually installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Installation labor: rates vary widely by city and contractor.
  • Shipping: salt bricks are heavy, so freight depends on order size and location.

These vary by location and project, so get local quotes rather than relying on a single national number. Our salt wall planning guide walks through each step.

Lighting a Salt Brick Wall in a Relaxation Lounge

Lighting does most of the work in a lounge. A few approaches that tend to suit quiet spaces:

  • Backlighting: LED strips behind the bricks give an even glow through the semi-translucent salt. This usually needs a frame with an air gap.
  • Edge grazing: a strip along the top or bottom edge shows off the brick texture and keeps the rest of the room dim.
  • Warm white on a dimmer: warm color temperatures match the pink tone, and a dimmer lets staff adjust the mood through the day.

Have a licensed electrician handle wiring and follow the lighting maker's instructions. For more layouts, see our salt brick wall lighting ideas.

Care and Upkeep in a Spa Setting

  • Dust the face with a dry, soft cloth or brush. Avoid wet mops and spray cleaners on the salt.
  • Keep drinks, wet towels and robes off nearby ledges where drips could reach the wall.
  • Ask staff to report any damp or chipped spots early so they can be checked.
  • If a brick chips, a spare from your 10% allowance makes replacement easier.
