Commercial Salt Wall Projects: A Planning Guide for Contractors

A commercial salt wall is planned like any heavy decorative cladding: confirm the wall, backing and bottom support first, size the material at about 4.5 salt pieces per square foot plus a cut allowance, bring the electrician in early if the wall is backlit, and price the salt as one project order. At Natural Salt Co. store prices checked October 11, 2026, pink salt bricks or tiles for an 80 to 200 sq ft commercial wall come to roughly $24 to $26 per square foot of wall in salt alone, before adhesive, framing, lighting, labor and freight.
This guide is for contractors, designers and fit-out teams scoping a salt wall for a spa, restaurant, hotel lobby, clinic reception, studio or retail space. It covers what to confirm before you quote, how to build the take-off, example material budgets from our store data, weight and delivery planning, and what to price locally.

What to Confirm Before You Quote a Commercial Salt Wall
Most surprises on a salt wall job come from questions nobody asked at the start. A short scope checklist helps:
- Wall size and location. Net square footage, height, openings and corners. Salt suits dry interior walls; wet zones, exterior walls and spots with constant splashing are poor candidates.
- Substrate and backing. What the salt bonds to, and whether the existing wall can carry the added weight. A structural engineer or the building's design team is the right source for that answer on a commercial job.
- Bottom support. How the first course is carried (a ledger, base or floor), since the load per square foot adds up quickly on taller walls.
- Lighting. Front-lit, edge-lit or backlit. A backlit wall changes the framing, the cavity depth and the electrical scope.
- Finish. Pink or white salt, bricks or tiles, and the layout pattern, since patterns with more cuts need a larger allowance.
- Code and approvals. Finish material and electrical requirements vary by jurisdiction and occupancy type, so check with the local building authority and the project's design professionals before ordering.
- Schedule and access. Delivery date, storage space on site, and how pallets reach the install area.
Our salt wall planning guide walks through these steps in more detail, and the product selection guide helps match the product to the room.
Salt Bricks vs Salt Tiles for Commercial Walls
Both products in our salt wall materials range share an 8 x 4 inch face, so the piece count per square foot is the same. The difference is depth, weight and how they look when lit.
| Store data | Pink salt brick | Pink salt tile |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 8 x 4 x 2 in | 8 x 4 x 1 in |
| Weight per piece (product listing) | about 5.5 lb | about 2.5 lb |
| Pieces per sq ft | 4.5 | 4.5 |
| Salt weight per sq ft (calculated) | about 24.75 lb | about 11.25 lb |
| Approx. price per piece, single | about $6.60 | about $5.99 |
| Approx. price per piece, 1000-pack | about $4.85 | about $4.91 |
Prices checked October 11, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
Tiles carry less than half the salt weight per square foot, which can simplify the backing on tall or wide walls. Bricks add depth and a chunkier look. Neither is lower per piece across every pack size in our current pricing: tiles are lower per piece in the small packs (1 to 30 pieces), while bricks are lower or equal per piece in the packs of 200 and up. For a deeper comparison, see salt tiles vs salt bricks. Browse salt bricks for walls or salt wall tiles to see every pack size.
How to Build the Material Take-Off
Each piece has a 32 sq in face (8 x 4). A square foot is 144 sq in, so 144 / 32 = 4.5 pieces per square foot, laid tight. The steps:
- Measure the net wall area in square feet (subtract large openings).
- Multiply by 4.5 to get the base piece count.
- Add an allowance for cuts, breakage and color sorting. We use 10% as a planning recommendation; patterns with many cuts or walls with lots of edges may need more. Our guide to cutting salt bricks and tiles explains why.
- Round up and compare pack sizes, because a larger pack can cost more per piece than a smaller one.
That last point matters on bigger orders. In our current pricing, the 100-pack costs more per piece than the 70-pack for both pink bricks (about $5.77 vs about $5.53) and pink tiles (about $5.72 vs about $5.71), and the 300-pack of bricks costs slightly more per brick than the 200-pack (about $5.32 vs about $5.30). The salt tile size guide has more on dimensions and coverage.
Example Commercial Salt Wall Material Budgets
The table below uses three example wall sizes, a 10% allowance, and the lowest-cost combination of pink salt pack sizes we found for each count at current store prices. These are salt-only figures from our store data.
| Example wall | Pieces (with 10%) | Brick packs | Approx. cost, bricks | Tile packs | Approx. cost, tiles | Approx. per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 10 ft (80 sq ft) | 397 | 1 x 400 | approx. $2,000 | 1 x 400 | approx. $2,109 | approx. $25 to $26 |
| 10 x 12 ft (120 sq ft) | 594 | 500 + 70 + 6 x 4 | approx. $3,037 | 500 + 70 + 20 + 4 | approx. $3,040 | approx. $25 |
| 10 x 20 ft (200 sq ft) | 991 | 1 x 1000 | approx. $4,849 | 1 x 1000 | approx. $4,910 | approx. $24 to $25 |
Prices checked October 11, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
The math for the 80 sq ft wall: 80 x 4.5 = 360 pieces, plus 10% = 396, rounded up to 397. A single 400-pack covers it at approx. $2,000 in bricks, or about $25 per square foot of wall. Larger or multi-wall projects can be quoted as one order through our project quote form.

Adhesive Quantities for a Commercial Salt Wall
Our pink salt adhesive product page states that one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks. The page gives that figure for bricks; for tiles we use the same range as a planning estimate. Bead size, wall texture and installer habits change real use, so treat these as planning ranges.
| Example wall | Pieces | Tubes (40 to 30 per tube) | Approx. cost range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 sq ft | 397 | 10 to 14 | approx. $268 to $374 |
| 120 sq ft | 594 | 15 to 20 | approx. $400 to $534 |
| 200 sq ft | 991 | 25 to 34 | approx. $668 to $908 |
Prices checked October 11, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
Costs above use the lowest-cost mix of tube packs we found for each count. In current pricing the 3-pack (about $26.66 per tube) comes in lower per tube than the 10-pack (about $28.10) and 15-pack (about $27.33), while the 50-pack (about $24.98) and 100-pack (about $22.30) are the lowest per tube for very large jobs. Follow the adhesive maker's directions for surface prep and cure time.
Weight, Delivery and Site Storage
Salt is heavy, and the weight affects both the wall and the delivery plan. Using the listed piece weights:
- 80 sq ft wall: about 1,980 lb of installed bricks (360 x 5.5 lb) or about 900 lb of installed tiles (360 x 2.5 lb).
- 120 sq ft wall: about 2,970 lb in bricks or about 1,350 lb in tiles.
- 200 sq ft wall: about 4,950 lb in bricks or about 2,250 lb in tiles.
The 1000-pack of pink bricks is listed at about 5,500 lb in total, so plan for pallet delivery, a forklift or liftgate, and dry indoor storage near the install area. Our salt brick wall weight guide shows how to calculate the installed load in more detail. Freight cost depends on destination and access, so ask for it with your project quote.
Costs to Price Locally
The figures above cover salt and adhesive from our store. A full commercial budget also includes items we do not supply, and these vary by location, building type and project scope:
- Framing, backing and bottom support: from your framing or general contractor.
- LED lighting and electrical work: fixtures, drivers, controls and a licensed electrician's installation. Our salt wall LED lighting guide covers the options to price.
- Installation labor: set and cut time, which rises with wall height, pattern and lighting cavities.
- Freight and handling: pallet delivery, liftgate, and moving material on site.
- Permits and inspections: where the local authority requires them.
We have not listed figures for these because local rates differ widely. Getting two or three local quotes gives a more reliable number than a national average.

A Practical Install Sequence for Commercial Jobs
- Confirm the backing and bottom support with the project's design team or engineer.
- Rough in power and lighting before the salt goes up, if the wall is backlit or edge-lit.
- Dry-lay a section on the floor to sort color and check the pattern.
- Set the first course level on its support, then work up in courses, checking level and plumb as you go.
- Make cuts with a suitable blade and keep offcuts for edges and fills.
- Let the adhesive cure per the manufacturer's directions before testing lights or finishing trim.
Our article on salt wall installation mistakes lists the problems that most often slow a job down.
Where Commercial Salt Walls Work Well
Salt walls tend to suit dry interior feature walls that guests see up close: spa lounges and treatment rooms, restaurant and bar back walls, hotel lobbies, reception desks, yoga studios and retail displays. For room-specific ideas, see our guides to salt walls for spas and salt tiles for restaurants.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a commercial salt wall cost in materials?
At Natural Salt Co. prices checked October 11, 2026, pink salt bricks or tiles for an 80 to 200 sq ft wall come to approx. $24 to $26 per square foot of wall, including a 10% allowance. For example, an 80 sq ft wall needs 397 pieces, approx. $2,000 in bricks. Adhesive, framing, lighting, labor and freight are extra.
How many salt bricks or tiles per square foot?
Both have an 8 x 4 inch face, so about 4.5 pieces cover one square foot (144 / 32 = 4.5). Add an allowance for cuts and breakage; we use 10% as a planning recommendation.
Should a commercial project use salt bricks or salt tiles?
Tiles (8 x 4 x 1 in, about 2.5 lb each) carry about 11.25 lb of salt per sq ft, less than half of bricks (8 x 4 x 2 in, about 5.5 lb each, about 24.75 lb per sq ft). Tiles can simplify backing on large walls; bricks give more depth. Per-piece price depends on pack size.
How many adhesive tubes does a commercial salt wall need?
Our adhesive product page states one tube covers 30 to 40 salt bricks. That works out to about 10 to 14 tubes for an 80 sq ft wall (397 pieces) and 25 to 34 tubes for a 200 sq ft wall (991 pieces). For tiles we use the same range as a planning estimate.
How heavy is a 200 sq ft salt wall?
Using the listed piece weights, 900 installed pieces weigh about 4,950 lb in bricks or about 2,250 lb in tiles, before adhesive and backing. Have the project's design team or engineer confirm the wall and support can carry the load.
What costs are not included in the salt price?
Framing and backing, bottom support, LED lighting and electrical work, installation labor, freight and handling, and any permits or inspections. These vary by location and project, so get local quotes.
