How Many Salt Bricks Do I Need for a Wall? Formula, Tables and Pack Math

By Natural Salt Co.
Grid of 8 x 4 x 2 inch pink Himalayan salt bricks laid flat to show one square foot, with a tape measure along one edge

You need about 4.5 salt bricks per square foot of wall when you use standard 8 x 4 x 2 inch bricks with the 8 x 4 inch face showing. Multiply your wall area by 4.5, subtract doors or windows, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage. A 4 x 8 ft wall works out to 144 bricks, or about 159 to order.

This guide shows the formula, a quick row-by-row check, brick counts for seven common wall sizes, adhesive tube counts and approximate pack costs from our Himalayan salt bricks collection.

The salt brick formula

Each brick face measures 8 x 4 inches, which is 32 square inches. A square foot is 144 square inches, so 144 / 32 = 4.5 bricks per square foot. The store lists the same figure another way: a pack of 70 bricks covers 15.56 sq ft, and a pack of 200 covers 44.44 sq ft. Both work out to 4.5 bricks per sq ft.

  1. Measure wall width and height in feet and multiply to get square feet.
  2. Subtract the area of any doors, windows or large cutouts.
  3. Multiply the net area by 4.5.
  4. Add about 10% for cuts, edge pieces and breakage, then round up.

Our guide to measuring a wall for a salt wall covers how to take accurate measurements on uneven walls.

Check it row by row

A second way to count is by rows. Bricks laid horizontally are 8 inches long and 4 inches tall, so you fit 1.5 bricks per foot of width and 3 rows per foot of height.

  • 8 ft wide = 96 inches / 8 = 12 bricks per row
  • 4 ft tall = 48 inches / 4 = 12 rows
  • 12 x 12 = 144 bricks, the same as 32 sq ft x 4.5

This count assumes tight joints. If you plan wider visible gaps between bricks, you will need slightly fewer, so measure a test row first.

If the 8 x 2 inch face shows

Some designs turn the brick so the narrow 8 x 2 inch face is visible and the wall is 4 inches deep. That face is 16 square inches, so the count doubles to 9 bricks per square foot, and the salt weight per square foot doubles too. For this kind of build, we recommend confirming support and layout with a qualified professional.

How many salt bricks for common wall sizes

The table uses 4.5 bricks per sq ft plus 10%, rounded up. The weight column uses the store-listed 5.5 lb per brick. Costs are the lowest-cost combination of the listed loose pink brick packs for each count (sauna kits not included).

For the 3 x 3 ft wall, 40.5 bricks rounds to 41. For the 4 x 6 and 8 x 10 ft walls, buying 120 bricks (one 70 pack plus one 50 pack) or a single 400 pack costs less than any exact mix for 119 or 396, so you get a few spare bricks.

Worked example: a wall with a doorway

Say you have a 10 x 8 ft wall with a 3 x 7 ft doorway.

  • Wall: 10 x 8 = 80 sq ft
  • Doorway: 3 x 7 = 21 sq ft
  • Net area: 80 - 21 = 59 sq ft
  • Bricks: 59 x 4.5 = 265.5
  • With 10%: 265.5 x 1.1 = 292.05, so order 293

The lowest-cost loose mix for exactly 293 bricks comes to approx. $1,591 (200 + 70 + five packs of 4 + 2 + 1). A single pack of 300 is approx. $1,595, only about $4 more, with 7 spare bricks and one box to handle. Either works; pick what suits your storage and spares plan.

When to plan more than 10%

A 10% allowance is a planning range, not a fixed rule. We suggest planning closer to 15% if your wall has many outlets or switches, arches or curves, several corners, or a running bond pattern with half bricks at each row end. Bricks are natural salt, so a few extra also help you swap out pieces with color or veining you do not want in a visible spot.

Brick pack prices per brick and per square foot

Pack size changes the price per brick, but larger is not always lower. These figures are store data from the pink 8 x 4 x 2 inch brick listings. Per sq ft cost = per brick price x 4.5.

Note that the 100 pack costs more per brick than the 50 and 70 packs, the 10 pack costs slightly more per brick than the 4 pack, and the 300 pack costs slightly more per brick than the 200 pack. Compare the totals for your exact count before you buy salt bricks. Our salt brick cost per square foot guide goes deeper on pricing.

How much adhesive per brick count

The store lists the 3 tube pack of pink salt adhesive as covering up to 120 salt bricks, which is about 40 bricks per tube. We suggest planning 1 tube per 30 to 40 bricks so you have some margin for back-buttering and touch-ups.

Prices checked November 2, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price. Costs use the lowest-cost mix of the listed adhesive packs, which here is 2 and 3 tube packs. Follow the adhesive maker's instructions for bead size and cure time.

If you are comparing with a sauna brick kit: the 200 brick kit with 6 adhesive tubes is approx. $1,240, while a loose 200 pack plus two 3 tube adhesive packs comes to approx. $1,219, about $21 less at today's prices.

Weight and wall support

At the listed 5.5 lb per brick, a salt brick wall carries about 24.75 lb of salt per square foot before adhesive. A 4 x 8 ft wall with 144 installed bricks is about 792 lb of salt. That load matters for framing and backing, so we recommend having a contractor or engineer confirm your wall can carry it. See our salt brick wall weight guide for the full math.

If weight is a concern, salt tiles share the same 8 x 4 inch face at 1 inch deep, so the count per square foot is the same with less salt on the wall. Our salt tile size guide compares the formats.

Planning checklist before you order

  • Measure width and height at more than one point and use the largest figures.
  • Subtract doors and windows, but not small outlets (cut around those instead).
  • Decide which face shows: 8 x 4 inch (4.5 per sq ft) or 8 x 2 inch (9 per sq ft).
  • Add 10% to 15% depending on cuts and pattern.
  • Compare pack totals, not just pack size.
  • Order adhesive at about 30 to 40 bricks per tube.
  • Confirm the wall can support the load.

Frequently asked questions

How many salt bricks are in a square foot?

About 4.5 standard 8 x 4 x 2 inch salt bricks cover one square foot when the 8 x 4 inch face shows. If the narrow 8 x 2 inch face shows, the count is 9 per square foot.

How many salt bricks do I need for a 4 x 8 ft wall?

A 4 x 8 ft wall is 32 sq ft, which takes 144 bricks. With a 10% allowance for cuts and breakage, order about 159 bricks. The lowest-cost loose pack mix for 159 was approx. $870 when prices were checked on November 2, 2026.

How much extra should I order?

About 10% is a common planning range. We suggest closer to 15% for walls with many outlets, arches, corners or a running bond pattern with half bricks at row ends.

Is a bigger pack always lower per brick?

No. At prices checked November 2, 2026, the 100 pack was about $5.77 per brick, more than the 70 pack at about $5.53 and the 50 pack at about $5.74. Compare totals for your exact count.

How many adhesive tubes do I need?

The store lists the 3 tube adhesive pack as covering up to 120 bricks, about 40 per tube. We suggest planning 1 tube per 30 to 40 bricks, so 159 bricks would need about 4 to 6 tubes.

How heavy is a salt brick wall?

Each brick is listed at 5.5 lb, so the salt adds about 24.75 lb per square foot. A 4 x 8 ft wall with 144 installed bricks carries about 792 lb of salt. Have a contractor or engineer confirm the wall can support it.
