Salt Brick Walls for Restaurants and Cafes: Placement, Sizing and Cost

By Natural Salt Co.
Pink Himalayan salt brick feature wall with white and peach veining behind a set table in a quiet restaurant dining area

A salt brick wall suits the dry, visible walls of a restaurant or cafe: the host stand, the front of the counter, booth backs and a dining room feature wall. Keep it away from cooking lines, espresso steam, sinks and splash zones. With 8 x 4 x 2 inch bricks at about 4.5 per sq ft plus 10% extra, a 10 x 4 ft booth wall needs about 198 bricks, roughly $1,114 in loose Himalayan salt bricks at prices checked October 22, 2026.

Where a Salt Brick Wall Works in a Restaurant or Cafe

Salt bricks look their strongest where guests see them up close and where the air stays dry. These spots tend to work well:

  • Host stand or entry wall. The first wall guests see. A backlit panel here sets the tone for the room.
  • Counter or bar front. A brick face on the customer side of a cafe counter. Plan a kick plate or a raised base so feet and stools do not hit the bottom rows.
  • Booth backs and banquettes. A long, low panel above the seat back gives a warm glow at table height.
  • Dining room feature wall. One full wall, often the one facing the entry, lit from behind or grazed from above.
  • Private dining room. A smaller room with less traffic, which makes it easier to protect the wall.

Where to Skip Salt Bricks

Salt is a natural mineral that can react to moisture. In food service, that rules out a few areas:

  • Behind or near cooktops, fryers, dish machines and kitchen exhaust, where heat, grease and steam collect.
  • Within reach of espresso machine steam wands, kettles or ice bins.
  • Near hand sinks, bus stations, drink stations or any wall that gets wiped down with water.
  • Outdoor patios and entries exposed to rain.
  • Tight walkways where trays, carts and chair backs can hit the wall.

If a room runs humid, such as a busy dining room next to an open kitchen, check humidity before you commit. Our salt tile care guide covers humidity ranges and dry cleaning, and the same care approach applies to bricks.

Bricks or Tiles for a Restaurant Wall?

Both come in an 8 x 4 inch face, so the look from the dining room is similar. The difference is depth and weight.

Bricks give a deeper, more solid look and suit counter fronts, partition walls and walls built on a base. Tiles can make sense where wall load is a concern. For a tile-focused version of this topic, see salt tiles for restaurants and dining rooms.

How Many Salt Bricks a Restaurant Wall Needs

The math is simple: wall width x height = sq ft, then sq ft x 4.5 = bricks, then add about 10% for cuts, breakage and color matching. Subtract doors, windows and other openings first.

Example for a 10 x 4 ft booth wall: 10 x 4 = 40 sq ft. 40 x 4.5 = 180 bricks. 180 x 1.10 = 198 bricks.

Installed salt weight is about 24.75 lb per sq ft (4.5 bricks x 5.5 lb), before adhesive. That same booth wall carries about 990 lb of salt. Have a contractor or engineer confirm the wall, floor or base can take the load. Our guide to salt brick wall weight walks through the calculation.

Salt Brick Prices by Pack

These are Natural Salt Co. store prices for pink 8 x 4 x 2 inch bricks from our salt brick collection. Per-brick and per-sq-ft figures are our own math at 4.5 bricks per sq ft.

The 70-pack has the lowest per-brick price in this list. The 100-pack costs a little more per brick than both the 70-pack and the 50-pack, so a bigger pack is not the lower-cost choice here.

Example Costs for Restaurant and Cafe Walls

Each example adds 10% to the brick count and uses the lowest-cost loose pack mix we found for that count. Adhesive is a planning estimate of 30 to 40 bricks per tube, based on the 3-tube pack being listed for up to 120 bricks.

That works out to roughly $28 per sq ft in bricks for each example. Adhesive totals use the lowest-cost mix of pink salt adhesive tubes (single tube about $30, 2-pack about $54, 3-pack about $80).

When a Sauna Brick Kit Costs Less

The store also sells brick packs that include adhesive. For some restaurant walls, a kit plus a few loose bricks came out lower in our math:

  • Booth wall, 198 bricks: the 200-brick pack with 6 adhesive tubes is about $1,240, and its 6 tubes sit inside the 5 to 7 tube estimate. If you need a 7th tube, the total is about $1,270.
  • Host wall, 238 bricks: the 200-brick pack with 6 tubes, a 30-pack and 8 singles is about $1,478. Add a 2-pack of adhesive if you need 8 tubes, for about $1,532.
  • Feature wall, 535 bricks: the 500-brick pack with 17 tubes, a 30-pack and 5 singles is about $3,088. Add a single tube if you need 18, for about $3,118.

For the counter front, the 2 packs of 70 plus loose tubes stayed lower. See the kit product pages for what is included before you order.

Lighting a Salt Brick Wall in a Dining Room

Most restaurant salt walls are lit in one of two ways:

  • Backlighting. LED strips behind the bricks, with a gap and a frame. This gives the strongest glow and suits host walls and feature walls.
  • Grazing. A light run above or below the wall, close to the surface. This shows texture and veining, and is easier to add to an existing wall.

Dimmable warm white light tends to suit dinner service. For a commercial space, have a licensed electrician plan and install the wiring, drivers and access panels to local code. Our salt wall LED lighting guide compares the options.

Practical Tips for Food Service Spaces

  • Plan around service. Schedule the install during a closure, and follow the adhesive maker's cure time before the room reopens.
  • Protect the lower rows. A raised base, ledge or trim can help keep chairs, carts and mop water off the bottom bricks.
  • Clean dry. Dust with a dry cloth or soft brush. Keep wet cleaning products and spray bottles away from the wall.
  • Check local rules. Ask your contractor about building, fire and health department requirements for wall finishes in your area before you order.
  • Order spares. The 10% allowance leaves a few bricks from the same order for later repairs.

For larger jobs, our commercial salt wall planning guide covers take-offs and quoting, and the pink salt wall materials page is another place to compare options.

Costs Not Included in These Numbers

The figures above cover just Natural Salt Co. bricks and adhesive. A restaurant project usually adds:

  • Labor for installation
  • Framing, backing board or a base for the wall
  • LED lighting, drivers and electrician time
  • Permits or inspections, if your area requires them
  • Shipping, which you can check at checkout

These are typical US project costs that vary by location, wall size and site conditions, so we have not put a number on them. Get local quotes from contractors and electricians.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a salt brick wall go in a restaurant?

Dry, visible walls tend to work well: the host stand or entry wall, the customer side of a cafe counter, booth backs and a dining room feature wall. Keep salt bricks away from cooking lines, espresso steam, sinks, bus stations and outdoor areas.

How many salt bricks do I need for a restaurant wall?

Multiply wall width by height for square feet, multiply by about 4.5 bricks per sq ft, then add about 10%. A 10 x 4 ft booth wall is 40 sq ft, so about 180 bricks plus 10%, or about 198 bricks.

How much does a salt brick restaurant wall cost?

At prices checked October 22, 2026, our example walls came to roughly $28 per sq ft in pink bricks: about $774 for an 8 x 3.5 ft counter front, about $1,114 for a 10 x 4 ft booth wall, about $1,344 for a 6 x 8 ft host wall and about $2,993 for a 12 x 9 ft feature wall, before adhesive, labor, lighting and shipping.

Can salt bricks go behind a coffee bar or espresso machine?

We suggest keeping salt bricks out of reach of espresso steam wands, kettles, ice bins and sinks. The customer side of the counter is usually a better spot than the wall behind the machines.

Are salt bricks or salt tiles better for a cafe?

Both have an 8 x 4 inch face and about 4.5 pieces per sq ft. Bricks are 2 inches deep and about 5.5 lb each, so they suit counter fronts and walls built on a base. Tiles are 1 inch deep and lighter, which can help where wall load is a concern.

How much does a salt brick wall weigh?

Salt bricks add about 24.75 lb of salt per sq ft (4.5 bricks x 5.5 lb), before adhesive. A 10 x 4 ft booth wall carries about 990 lb. Have a contractor or engineer confirm the wall, floor or base can carry it.

How do I clean a salt brick wall in a restaurant?

Dust with a dry cloth or soft brush and keep spray bottles and wet cleaning products away from the wall. A raised base or trim can help keep mop water off the bottom rows.
