Salt Tiles vs Salt Panels: Formats Explained

A salt tile is a single 8 x 4 x 1 inch block of Himalayan salt. A salt panel is a finished section of salt, usually many tiles fixed to a backer board, often with LED lighting behind it. In many projects the panel is made from tiles, so the real choice is whether you build the panel yourself from loose tiles or buy something pre-assembled. This guide explains both formats, how they compare, and what a tile-built panel costs at our current store prices.
What is a salt tile?
Our Himalayan salt tiles are cut to 8 x 4 x 1 inches, weigh about 2.9 lb each and are listed as 98%+ sodium chloride. About 4.5 tiles cover one square foot (a 100-pack is listed at 22.22 sq ft). The product page describes the tiles as semi-translucent and backlight optimized, which is why they are a common choice for lit walls.
Tiles are sold loose in packs from a single tile up to 300 tiles in the pink salt tile collection. You set them on a prepared wall or backer with pink salt adhesive, in whatever size and pattern your space needs.

What does "salt panel" mean?
"Salt panel" is not one standard product. Sellers and designers use it in a few ways:
- A tile-built panel: a framed or bordered section of salt tiles on a wall, often 2 x 3 ft to 4 x 6 ft, sometimes backlit. This is a common meaning and it is what you get when you build with loose tiles.
- A pre-assembled panel: tiles already bonded to a board at the factory or workshop, shipped as one or more large units ready to mount.
- A backlit wall system or kit: tiles plus lighting and adhesive bundled for a set panel size.
Natural Salt Co. sells the salt itself as loose tiles and bricks. If you want a specific panel format or a quote for a full system, contact us and we can tell you what is available for your size.
Salt tiles vs salt panels: side-by-side
The table below compares building a panel from loose tiles with buying a pre-assembled panel. Traits for pre-assembled panels are general and vary by seller, so check the listing for any product you consider.
| Factor | Loose salt tiles (tile-built panel) | Pre-assembled salt panel |
|---|---|---|
| Size flexibility | Any size in 8 x 4 inch steps, cut tiles fill the edges | Set by the panel dimensions |
| Shipping | Packed in tile packs, about 2.9 lb per tile | Large, heavy units that may need freight handling |
| Breakage risk | A cracked tile is a single replacement | Damage can affect a whole unit |
| Install time on site | Longer, tiles are set one by one | Shorter once the backing is ready |
| Pattern choice | Running bond, stacked, herringbone and more | Fixed by the maker |
| Repairs later | Swap individual tiles | Depends on how the panel is built |
| Backlighting | You plan LED runs behind the tiles | May include lighting, check the listing |
For most home and small commercial walls, loose tiles give more control over size and layout. A pre-assembled unit can make sense when site time is very limited, as long as the wall and mounting are rated for its weight.
Tiles vs bricks inside a panel
Some panels use 2 inch thick salt bricks instead of 1 inch tiles. Both share the same 8 x 4 inch face, but our pink salt bricks are about 5.5 lb each, roughly twice the weight of a tile. Tiles keep a wall-mounted panel lighter and thinner, while bricks add depth. Our salt tile thickness comparison and salt tiles vs salt bricks guide go deeper.
Store data: pink salt tile prices
These are Natural Salt Co. prices for 8 x 4 x 1 inch pink salt tiles, with per-tile cost worked out by dividing the pack price by the tile count.
| Pack | Approx. price | Approx. per tile |
|---|---|---|
| Single tile | $6 | $5.99 |
| Pack of 10 | $59 | $5.88 |
| Pack of 30 | $175 | $5.83 |
| Pack of 50 | $290 | $5.80 |
| Pack of 70 | $400 | $5.71 |
| Pack of 100 | $572 | $5.72 |
| Pack of 150 | $810 | $5.40 |
| Pack of 200 | $1,071 | $5.35 |
| Pack of 300 | $1,600 | $5.33 |
Prices checked October 24, 2026. All prices are approximate and can change; see the product page for the current price.
Note that the 100-pack works out slightly higher per tile (about $5.72) than the 70-pack (about $5.71), so a bigger pack is not automatically lower per tile. Compare the actual numbers for your quantity.
What a tile-built salt panel costs
The math: panel area in sq ft x 4.5 tiles, plus 10% for cuts and spares, rounded up. Tile cost uses the lowest-cost pack mix we found for each count at the prices above. Adhesive is a planning estimate: the 3-tube pack is listed for up to 120 salt bricks, so we plan about 40 tiles per tube (tiles have the same 8 x 4 inch face). Follow the adhesive maker's directions for your actual spread.
| Panel size | Tiles (incl. 10%) | Example pack mix | Approx. tile cost | Approx. adhesive | Approx. salt and adhesive total | Approx. tile cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 3 ft (6 sq ft) | 30 | 1 x 30 | $175 | $30 (1 tube) | $205 | $29 |
| 3 x 4 ft (12 sq ft) | 60 | 50 + 10 | $349 | $54 (2 tubes) | $403 | $29 |
| 4 x 6 ft (24 sq ft) | 119 | 100 + 10 + 4 + 4 + 1 | $684 | $80 (3 tubes) | $764 | $28.50 |
| 8 x 10 ft wall (80 sq ft) | 396 (order 400) | 200 + 200 | $2,142 | $268 (10 tubes) | $2,410 | $27 |

Small panels cost a bit more per sq ft because they fall into smaller packs. At full-wall size, the 200-pack brings tile cost down to about $27 per sq ft. For the full-wall row, two 200-packs cost less than an exact 396-tile mix at these prices.

Weight to plan for
At about 2.9 lb per tile and 4.5 tiles per sq ft, installed tiles add roughly 13 lb of salt per sq ft. A 4 x 6 ft panel (108 tiles before spares) carries about 313 lb of salt, before the backer board, adhesive and any frame. That is why the wall, studs and fasteners matter as much as the salt. Have a qualified contractor confirm the wall can carry the load, especially for large or wall-hung panels.
Costs to price locally (typical US estimates)
These items are not Natural Salt Co. products, and costs vary by location and project. Get local quotes for:
- Backer board, framing or a perimeter trim for the panel
- LED strips, drivers and a licensed electrician if the panel is backlit
- Installation labor, if you are not setting the tiles yourself
- Shipping, which is shown at checkout and depends on weight and destination
For lighting plans, see our guide to backlit salt tile panels, which covers backlit salt tiles, LED layout and what to price locally.
Which format fits your project?
- Choose loose tiles if you want a custom size, a specific pattern, easy tile-by-tile repairs, or lower per-tile pricing from the larger tile packs.
- Consider a pre-assembled panel if on-site time is the main limit and the size you need matches a standard unit.
- Consider bricks if you want a deeper, heavier look and the wall is built for the extra weight.
Before you order, measure the wall with our salt tile size guide and map lighting and backing with the salt wall planning guide. Our salt tile installation steps walk through setting the tiles.

Frequently asked questions
Is a salt panel different from salt tiles?
Usually a salt panel is made from salt tiles. Tiles are the individual 8 x 4 x 1 inch blocks; a panel is a finished section of tiles on a backer, often backlit. Some sellers also sell pre-assembled panel units.
How many salt tiles are in a 4 x 6 ft panel?
About 108 tiles at 4.5 per sq ft, or 119 with a 10% allowance for cuts and spares. At prices checked October 24, 2026, that is approx. $684 in pink salt tiles.
How much does a tile-built salt panel cost?
At prices checked October 24, 2026, tiles plus adhesive run approx. $205 for a 2 x 3 ft panel, approx. $403 for 3 x 4 ft and approx. $764 for 4 x 6 ft. Lighting, backing, labor and shipping are extra and vary locally.
Are larger tile packs always lower per tile?
No. The 100-pack works out to about $5.72 per tile, slightly above the 70-pack at about $5.71. The 150, 200 and 300 packs are lower, at about $5.33 to $5.40 per tile.
How heavy is a salt tile panel?
Installed tiles add roughly 13 lb of salt per sq ft (about 2.9 lb per tile x 4.5 tiles). A 4 x 6 ft panel carries about 313 lb of salt before backer, adhesive and frame, so have a qualified contractor confirm the wall can support it.
Can salt tiles be backlit as a panel?
Yes. Our product page lists the tiles as semi-translucent and backlight optimized. Plan LED placement, heat and wiring with a licensed electrician and follow the lighting maker's specifications.
Should I use tiles or bricks for a panel?
Tiles are 1 inch thick and about 2.9 lb; bricks are 2 inches thick and about 5.5 lb. Tiles keep a wall-mounted panel lighter, while bricks add depth. Both share the same 8 x 4 inch face.
