Salt Bricks for a Salt Room: How Many You Need for a Full Room

To find how many salt bricks a full salt room needs, measure every wall you plan to cover, subtract doors and windows, multiply the net square footage by 4.5 bricks, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage. An 8 x 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling and one door works out to about 1,202 bricks, or about 1,323 with the allowance. Natural Salt Co. salt bricks for walls measure 8 x 4 x 2 in and weigh about 5.5 lb each, based on our product pages.
This guide covers the counting method, three worked room examples, how to turn a count into packs, and how much pink salt adhesive to plan for. If you are still deciding between lining a whole room and building one feature wall, start with our full salt room vs single feature wall cost comparison.

How Many Salt Bricks per Square Foot?
Each brick has an 8 x 4 in face, which is 32 sq in. A square foot is 144 sq in, so 144 divided by 32 gives 4.5 bricks per square foot when bricks are laid flat with the 8 x 4 face showing. Our 400-brick pack page lists 88.89 sq ft of coverage, which matches the same 4.5 bricks per sq ft.
That figure assumes tight joints. Wide grout lines or spaced patterns use slightly fewer bricks per square foot, while lots of cuts around corners and openings use more.
Step-by-Step: Counting Salt Bricks for a Full Room
1. Measure each wall
Multiply length by height for every wall you plan to cover. For a rectangular room with four full-height walls, the quick version is: perimeter x ceiling height. An 8 x 10 ft room has a 36 ft perimeter, so at 8 ft high it has 288 sq ft of wall.
2. Subtract openings
Subtract each door, window, built-in cabinet or panel area you plan to leave uncovered. A standard interior door is roughly 3 x 7 ft, or 21 sq ft. Measure your own openings, since sizes vary.
3. Multiply by 4.5
Multiply the net square footage by 4.5 and round up to a whole brick.
4. Add an allowance
We recommend adding about 10% for cuts at corners and openings, breakage in transit or handling, and color matching. Rooms with many openings or an intricate pattern may need more. Our guide on how to cut salt bricks and tiles covers cut planning in more detail.
5. Convert to packs
Compare pack prices before ordering. A bigger pack does not cost less per brick at every step, so check the numbers in the table below.
Brick Counts for Three Example Rooms
These are planning examples, not quotes. Each room has four full-height walls covered, with openings subtracted.
| Room (L x W x H) | Gross wall area | Openings | Net wall area | Bricks at 4.5 per sq ft | With 10% allowance | Order weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 x 8 x 7 ft | 196 sq ft | 21 sq ft (one door) | 175 sq ft | 788 | 867 | about 4,769 lb |
| 8 x 10 x 8 ft | 288 sq ft | 21 sq ft (one door) | 267 sq ft | 1,202 | 1,323 | about 7,277 lb |
| 10 x 12 x 8 ft | 352 sq ft | 33 sq ft (door plus 3 x 4 ft window) | 319 sq ft | 1,436 | 1,580 | about 8,690 lb |
Order weight uses 5.5 lb per brick from our product pages and includes the 10% allowance bricks.

What the numbers show: the per-brick price falls from about $6.60 for a single brick to about $4.85 in the 1,000 pack, but not at every step. The 100 pack works out higher per brick than the 50 and 70 packs, the 300 pack is slightly higher per brick than the 200 pack, and the 400 and 500 packs come out the same per brick. For bulk orders, our bulk salt bricks guide goes deeper on pallet planning.
Room Cost Breakdown: Bricks and Adhesive
We ran every pack combination for each room and listed the lowest-cost mix of loose brick packs we found that reaches the 10% allowance count. Adhesive is planned at 30 to 40 bricks per tube (see the next section).
| Room | Bricks ordered | Lowest loose-pack mix found | Approx. brick cost | Approx. per sq ft of net wall | Adhesive tubes | Approx. adhesive cost | Approx. materials total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 x 8 x 7 ft | 867 | 400 + 400 + 70 | approx. $4,387 | about $25.07 | 22 to 29 | approx. $588 to $774 | approx. $4,975 to $5,161 |
| 8 x 10 x 8 ft | 1,323 | 1,000 + 300 + five 4-packs + one 2-pack + 1 single | approx. $6,589 | about $24.68 | 34 to 45 | approx. $908 to $1,200 | approx. $7,496 to $7,788 |
| 10 x 12 x 8 ft | 1,580 | 1,000 + 500 + 70 + two 4-packs + one 2-pack | approx. $7,799 | about $24.45 | 40 to 53 | approx. $1,068 to $1,329 | approx. $8,867 to $9,128 |

Per square foot here is the brick cost divided by net wall area, so it includes the 10% allowance bricks. Adhesive mixes use our 3-pack, 2-pack and 50-pack listings, whichever came out lowest for each tube count.
Sauna brick kits can lower the total. Our sauna brick kits bundle bricks with adhesive tubes. In our check, the 6 x 8 x 7 ft room at 22 tubes came out at approx. $4,845 using a 450-brick kit (with 15 tubes), a 400 pack, four 4-packs, one single brick, two adhesive 2-packs and one adhesive 3-pack. That is about $130 less than the loose-pack route. The same check came out about $144 lower for the 8 x 10 ft room and about $84 lower for the 10 x 12 ft room. Compare kit contents on each product page before you order.

How Much Adhesive for a Salt Brick Room?
Our adhesive 3-pack lists coverage of up to 120 salt bricks, which is up to 40 bricks per tube. Our sauna kits pair roughly 30 bricks with each tube (for example, 300 bricks with 10 tubes). That gives a planning range of 30 to 40 bricks per tube. Divide your brick count by 40 for the low end and by 30 for the high end, then round up. Uneven backing, thick beads or lots of cuts can push you toward the higher count. Follow the label directions for application and cure time. Our salt brick adhesive guide has more on choosing and ordering.
Partial-Height Option: A Lower Brick Count
Covering the lower half of each wall cuts the count sharply. In the 8 x 10 ft room, a 4 ft high band around all four walls is 144 sq ft. Subtracting the 3 x 4 ft part of the door leaves 132 sq ft, which is 594 bricks, or 654 with a 10% allowance. The lowest loose mix we found was a 500 pack, a 150 pack and one 4-pack at approx. $3,338. Add 17 to 22 tubes of adhesive at approx. $454 to $588 for an approx. materials total of $3,792 to $3,926. Order weight is about 3,597 lb.
Weight and Wall Support
At 4.5 bricks per sq ft and 5.5 lb per brick, a salt brick wall carries about 24.75 lb of salt per square foot before adhesive. The installed bricks in the 8 x 10 ft example (1,202 bricks) weigh about 6,611 lb spread across four walls. Before ordering, we recommend having a contractor or structural professional confirm that your walls, framing and floor can carry that load. Our salt brick wall weight guide shows the math by wall size.
If weight is a concern, 1 inch salt tiles share the same 8 x 4 in face and coverage of 4.5 per sq ft at roughly half the weight per piece, based on the weights listed on our tile pages. Browse the salt tile collection for current tile packs and specs.
This guide covers walls. Overhead salt on a ceiling adds a different set of structural questions, so we suggest leaving any ceiling plan to a qualified professional.
Costs Not Included
The totals above are salt and adhesive only, based on store prices. A full room project may also need framing or backer board, LED lighting, an electrician, installation labor and freight shipping. These vary widely by location, room condition and design, so we have not put numbers on them. Get local quotes for each, and check freight costs at checkout or with our team. The salt wall planning guide and product selection guide can help you scope the rest of the build.
